The altherma air source heat pump is Daikin’s hybrid air source heat pump. This is the model of air source heat pump that Hassle Free Boilers sells, because it’s been proven to be so incredibly cost effective, as well as being top-of-the-line.

What is a hybrid air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump is a sustainable way of creating energy that can be used to heat your home. It works almost like a refrigerator in reverse. The air source heat pump takes heat from the air outside and then, using two sets of copper coils (one inside your home and one outside) converts it into energy that is used to heat your home or your hot water. The leftover cool air is then released back into the environment.

Air source heat pumps are designed to heat your home and hot water to a moderate temperature. If a higher temperature is required, then you may need support from a traditional boiler.

A hybrid air source heat pump can be used in conjunction with your traditional heating and hot water systems which means that you get the best of both worlds. It has a smart controller which checks both the temperature outside, and the current cost of electricity. This information is then used to decide whether it is more cost effective for your heating to come from the air source heat pump, from your boiler, or from a combination of the two.

This means that using a hybrid heat pump is incredibly cost effective, and you’ll still be lovely and warm.

How it works

The Altherma air source heat pump consists of three main parts; the outdoor unit, the indoor unit and the Daikin altherma hybrid controller.

  • The outdoor unit is the Daikin air source heat pump. It works by extracting the heat from the air, and using this to heat the water for your heating system. It works even at low temperatures, although it is more effective in milder climates.
  • The indoor unit distributes the heated water from the outdoor unit into your heating and hot water systems. The Daikin Altherma controller is in constant communication with the indoor unit, and dependent on your energy prices it will run either the heat pump, the heat pump with support from your boiler, or the boiler only.
  • Daikin altherma hybrid controller. This is where you can view and change your energy prices to ensure you are always operating in the most cost efficient mode, and do things like increase the hot water temperature and view information about your system.

“We had a great experience. A Daikin approved installer helped us select the correct heat pump for us. He kept us up to date throughout the whole process and was able to meet all agreed deadlines.

Now we finally got rid of our very old oil boiler, which has created more space in the garden. Comfort levels have improved so much, we especially notice it now the weather has turned colder.

Great solution, we recommend to everybody. Wish we had changed years ago….”
