New Boiler Installation

The cost of replacing an old boiler and having a new one installed in your home can vary. For example, if you are looking for a new gas condensing combi boiler installation in the same location as your old boiler, you can expect to pay around £600.

If you need to relocate your new boiler to somewhere different in your home, then the cost of this installation will rise dramatically. You could end up paying as much as £1500, sometimes even more, if it’s a particularly awkward move.

15 Things to Consider Before Replacing Your Boiler

Boilers are one of those things in life that we take completely for granted. That’s probably the reason why when it comes to that dreaded time of a boiler breakdown or it’s time to replace your old model you find you have no idea where to start, who to trust or what to look for.

So we’ve put together this comprehensive 15 point guide of things to consider before replacing your boiler and have a new one installed. It covers every aspect possible, from the different shapes, sizes and types that boilers come in, right down to what you should expect from your installation.

1. Why You Should Replace Your Old Boiler?

Did you know that around 4.5 million boilers in the UK are 10 years or older? What this means is that most, if not all, of them are G-rated for efficiency. In other words for every £1 you spend on heating your home, 40p is wasted. If your boiler falls into this category it’s definitely worth replacing it as it could be costing you a lot of unnecessarily wasted money. So get a quote for a new installation quickly!

2. What Fuel Type?

Most UK households have a gas heating system equipped with a gas boiler. But if you’re one of the estimated 4.3m households not connected to the UK’s gas network, there are alternatives. These include fitting an oil boiler, liquid petroleum gas or LPG boiler, or a wood-burning stove fitted with a back boiler.

3. What Is Your Installation Budget?

We know that spending money on a new replacement boiler can be quite a hefty investment, which never comes at a convenient time. In order to make this expenditure as bearable as possible, and thanks to our partnership with Barclay’s, we can offer you a wide range of options for financing your boiler so just ask for prices and we will be happy to quote you.

4. How many bedrooms/bathrooms does your property have?

How many bedrooms and bathrooms you have in your home determines how many radiators you have, this, in turn, dictates what size your replacement boiler will need to be. As a rough estimate most flats, apartments and smaller houses, with up to 10 average size radiators and 1 bathroom will require a 24 to 27kw boiler. For a medium to large 3-4 bed house with up to 15 average size radiators, 1 bathroom and an en-suite a 28-34kw Combi Boiler would be installed.

5. How many people are you sharing your home with?

This is more of a factor in determining what type of boiler you will need to replace your old one with. This is because boilers installed 10 years ago or more, may not be able to maintain high levels of water pressure whilst heating the water, so if more than one person is having a shower at the same time there can be some pressure loss, leading to a slightly less satisfying shower.

6. How Much Disruption Will a Boiler Replacement Be?

Normally, you need a surveyor to come around to your home to assess how much work will need to be done prior to your installation. However, at Hassle Free Boilers we strive to make getting a new boiler as convenient as possible which is why we have introduced our new Remote Technical Survey service, meaning we can do all of the surveying needed without ever having to enter your home.

7. How Long Will My Boiler Installation Take?

On average a getting a new Combi boiler installed will take 6-10 hours (normally done in a day), although a conversion, for example a System boiler to Combi boiler installation can take up to 2 days.

8. Do I Have Hot or Cold Tanks In My Loft?

If you already have hot or cold or both water tanks installed in your home you have more options for what type of boiler replacement you can get. If you currently have a combi boiler, and no water tanks but want a heat-only boiler then you would have to get the tanks installed too, which could make the job a lot more costly. It really is important to consider all of your options before you agree on your final boiler replacement.

9. What Types of Boiler Replacements Are There?

Heat-Only/Open-Vent Boiler Replacement
The heat-only or open-vent boiler is also known as a condensing ‘conventional’ boiler or ‘boiler. It works by carrying the hot water to the central heating system, hot water cylinder and radiators. Conventional boilers are operated with programmable controls.

Combi Boiler Replacement
The combination or ‘combi’ boiler takes its name from its dual function: it’s a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler combined in one compact unit. A combi boiler provides heating and hot water directly from the boiler, which means almost immediate hot water.

System Boiler Replacement
The system boiler is very similar to a heat-only or conventional boiler. It directly heats your central heating system, producing hot water stored in the hot water cylinder – which in turn is usually tucked away inside an airing cupboard. Like a combi boiler, it’s little more compact than a conventional boiler, thanks to its mainly pre-built components.

10. Where Will My New Boiler Installation Be?

This depends on where your current boiler is located and whether you’re looking to change the type of boiler you have. The easiest and cheapest place for any boiler to be installed is in the same location as the old one, this is because the pipes are all in the vicinity.

However, for example, if you are converting from a system boiler to a combi boiler installation then there is a good chance that the cold and hot water pipes will have to be run to the new boiler. Generally, a boiler can be installed anywhere, as long as it’s near an outside wall in order for the flue to exit and a drain. You will also need gas, flow and return (radiator pipes), hot and cold water pipes.

11. Are The Boiler Installers I’m Considering Reputable?

Like in every industry in the world, there are companies that produce a higher quality of work, and other companies that take less pride in their work. A boiler is an investment that is meant to last you 10+ years, and is certainly one of the last things in your home that you would want breaking down. That’s why it is important to take a little time to make sure you are having a trustworthy product installed in your home.
Hassle Free Boilers have a decade of experience in the industry and have built close working relationships with some of the best brands in the business, including Ideal, Vaillant and Worcester-Bosch (who supply boilers to Her Majesty the Queens estates). So if you decide to go for a Hassle Free Boiler you can be confident that you are getting a boiler that you can trust to not let you down.

12. Do I Need My Heating System Flushed With My New Installation?

Yes you do, if your boiler is damaged as a result of sludge in your system your warranty will be void, make sure your engineer does this. Luckily, Hassle Free Boilers do a system flush as standard, with every installation, free of charge and fit a new top of the range Magnaclean magnetic filter system too.

13. Will My Replacement Boiler Be Compatible With a Nest Thermostat?

Yes, all of the boilers we provide are compatible with the energy savings Nest thermostat.

14. Is My Boiler Installer Gas Safety Registered?

It is extremely important you are hiring an experienced, trustworthy and above all gas-safe registered engineer to install your boiler. This is not only for the quality of work but also for the general safety of your home, as a poorly installed boiler can be a hazard in the household. Hassle Free Boilers only work with reputable, and gas-safe registered engineers.

We also ensure that the engineer we hire to replace your boiler is located locally to you, meaning you don’t have to deal with a long waiting time and they are always on hand to help you should anything go wrong.

15. What Is My Installers After-care Service Like?

Everyone likes to be well looked after once your old boiler has been replaced with a shiny new one, whether it’s having someone on the phone to help you through programming your thermostat, or a 24/7, 365 on call repair service.

At Hassle Free Boilers we take great pride in our after service, we’re not like these other large companies who forget about you the second they have installed your boiler and you have paid them.
